Leadership
At Pilgrim, we want to help members interested in serving in a leadership capacity improve their leadership skills and abilities.

Leadership Training
In order to provide support to those individuals who have expressed a desire for leadership, we offer Leadership Training at least annually at an offsite location. Below is an outline of the areas that will be addressed.

Pilgrim Leadership Training Blocks

Thoughts on Leadership
Administration, Logistics and Introductions actions will be addressed, then the Senior Pastor and Council President will discuss course expectations and share their thoughts on leadership as it pertains to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Introduction to Leadership
An overview and discussion/analysis of the distinctions between managing/ management and leading/leadership, to include the core competencies and basic skills required to be a successful leader.

Leading in a Multi-Generational World
An examination of the different values, loyalties, work ethics and other general characteristics commonly associated with the four current generations (“Depression Era,” “Baby Boomers,” “Generation X,” and “Millennials”) and the related leadership implications and challenges in a multi-generational world.

Decision Making, Problem Solving & Influence
A practical review of the tools and models that can assist a leader in effectively and efficiently involving others in the decision-making and problem-solving processes. Additionally, an examination and discussion of the various ways leaders can positively influence subordinates, peers, church members and potential members.

Leading Change
Although it is recognized as an inevitable and natural part of individual and organizational life, we nonetheless often fail to recognize, plan for and lead change efforts. This block examines the predictability of the change process and explores the leader’s role in successfully accomplishing organizational change.

Leadership Communications
Communication is one of the most important skills/competencies for any leader. This session will examine both the mechanics and nuances inherent to communication, while also discussing the higher importance and impact associated with successful leadership communication, and the importance of delegation.

Strategic Planning
Leaders must anticipate and prepare for the opportunities and threats in a changing world. It is imperative that leaders think strategically and align individual and functional objectives to achieve their organization’s strategic priorities. This block will provide a framework for defining and implementing the key elements of strategy and strategic planning.

Pilgrim Strategic Plan
The Pilgrim Lutheran Church Strategic Plan will be presented by Pastor Rusty Sullivan. Related expectations of members at Pilgrim will be addressed and an opportunity for discussion will be provided.

Pilgrim Simulation Exercise
A simulation exercise based on current, real-life Pilgrim opportunities and/or issues will be presented. Participants will work in teams to complete the exercise using the leadership competencies, tools, models and other material presented in earlier training blocks. Teams will prepare presentations to a combined Pilgrim and RDA leadership panel.

Simulation Presentations
Participant teams will present the findings (observations, recommendations and problem resolutions) from simulation exercises from the earlier block.  Presentations will be made to a leadership panel and the material presented will be summarized and forwarded to the Pilgrim Church Council.

Leading Like Jesus
A presentation by Pastor Stephen Mims featuring points of emphasis from the book Lead Like Jesus: Lessons from the Greatest Leadership Role Model of All Times by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges.

On Leadership…
“Now is the time for all good leaders to come to the aid of Pilgrim….” A guest or keynote speaker for the course will discuss leadership responsibilities in today’s world.

Graduation
An appropriate ceremony to acknowledge the completion of Pilgrim Leadership Course.
